Bao Leiyan, an intangible cultural heritage inheritor and manager at the Limin Traditional Chinese Costumes Factory in Hangzhou, east China's Zhejiang Province, recently spoke to journalists about her work experience and future plans.
Under Bao's lead, the turnover of the factory, which specializes in producing the popular asymmetrical dress known as a cheongsam, has improved a lot in previous years.
Last year, on behalf of her father, she joined a delegation from Zhejiang to visit Sri Lanka.
Before the trip, several colleagues recommend that she take a traditional Chinese cheongsam as the gift. However, Bao could not be sure to make one the right size, so she chose to present a decorative painting of the garment instead.
"I think the traditional cheongsam can represent our country the best. I use embroidered satin, which is less common now," Bao said.
Referring to her future work plan, she said there have been some conflicts with her father, such as the opening of an online store.
Bao explained: "Because we only provide tailor-made Chinese-style clothes and cheongsams, if we sell on the internet, we cannot make sure the size is accurate, which is also the most important thing. "
Meanwhile, Bao mentioned: "Opening online stores is the current trend. Several of our customers also want to have a more convenient channel to buy clothes, as it is impossible for them to come to Hangzhou every time."
So, Bao put forward an idea of selling the ready-made garments in standard sizes, without the 30 percent customization fees. This can cater for the needs of most customers.
Bao said she also needs to choose the appropriate online store, such as a specialist platform for time-honored or intangible cultural heritage brands.
"To be honest, the internet is not the most suitable platform for our field. However, we need to change our minds and management methods based on customers' needs," Bao added.
