As industries go, the manufacturing of small cosmetic brushes can also offer tens of thousands of job opportunities and bring in tremendous fortunes.
Born in 1989 in East China's Jiangxi Province, Yang Yang is the founder and executive in chief of Jiangxi MSQ Cosmetics Co, Ltd. The cosmetic brush made by her team has been exported to 45 countries so far. With annual sales exceeding 200 million yuan (US $28.6 million), it is now one of the best products in the cosmetic industry in China.
After graduating from Jiangxi University of Technology in 2010, Yang and her classmates scraped together 5,000 yuan (US $71) and rented a private house in Nanchang, the capital city of Jiangxi Province, hoping to start their first cross-border e-commerce business.
"Give me a network cable, a phone, a computer, and I can achieve my business dream," said Yang. However, business is much more complicated than a mere slogan. Since they didn't have any core products, the sales figures did not rise. Therefore, Yang and her business partners decided to change their business modes.
"We screened more than 20 kinds of products and finally jumped into cosmetic brushes," said Yang. With people's increasing pursuit of beauty, the requirements for various functions of cosmetics are becoming more and more categorized. Cosmetic brushes, once regarded as a functional accessory, have gradually become an independent beauty product.
Wengang Town in Jinxian County, Nanchang City, has long been regarded as the hometown of Chinese writing brushes. Yang's team innovatively applied the craft of making Wengang writing brushes to the production of cosmetic brushes, and at the same time continuously developed their products' design, craftsmanship and appearance.
In 2011, Yang got an order for 200,000 cosmetic brushes from Brazil. It was her first big order. However, Yang and her team didn't have their own brand then and the quality of the product was not mature enough. In the end, two-thirds of the order was returned, with no profit achieved.
In 2012, the team registered their brand in Nanchang. They had accumulated a certain amount of network resources and a good reputation within the industry, and this time the sales figures finally increased.
From 2010 to 2012, the company witnessed a turnover of 1 million yuan (US $142,857) and in 2015, the figure exceeded 100 million yuan (US $14.3 million). Now, more than 100,000 cosmetic brushes are sold from Nanchang to 45 countries every day. Yang's team has grown from a few people to a staff of more than 200.
Following her success, Yang set up inspirational scholarships in colleges to carry out school-enterprise cooperation, hoping to help more students start their own businesses and realize their dream.
