60% of Parents Willing to Take Part in Family Educational Activities: Report

Nearly 60 percent of parents were willing to take part in family educational activities, according to a recent report released by the women's federation in the city of Foshan, south China's Guangdong Province.

The report focused on six educational subjects among families in the local region. According to officials from the federation, the findings in the report would be an important reference for their future work. They analyzed the families' current educational status, communities' schools, young children's psychology and other aspects, officials said.

The survey showed that some people have misunderstandings about family education and the quality received was not high. Meanwhile, many families were not active in asking for educational guidance when they met with problems.

Therefore, experts from the research group suggested the city's parents should improve their children's educational quality while enhancing the family's ability to educate. The local government should integrate resources between the federation, schools and communities to create an advanced educational pattern, leading parents to build a modern concept of family education, experts added.

According to the report, many parents get relevant educational information from the Internet, television and WeChat (China's most popular messaging and calling app), which indicates that educational methods are more diversified.

However, it also showed that a long-term family education popularization mechanism should be established and strengthened in the future. Parents should have a life-long learning philosophy and constantly improve their understanding of family education, the report suggested.

Those responsible for conducting the survey of Parents' Participation in Family Educational Activities concluded that more activities should be carried out in accordance with young children's growth development, especially in early education. Parents in the city should help their children form good habits, including reading from a young age, the responsible person added. In addition, heads of local schools should actively organize activities for students' parents so as to help them improve their parenting skills.

The survey also found that some parents do not have high recognition of schools in their communities, and that merely one third of respondents have attended training in these schools. Hence, experts suggested that publicity should be greatly improved among parents and schools should improve their teaching management system.

After conducting investigations in four communities in Foshan, the survey showed that 65 percent of residents have participated in local ideological and moral activities at least once. Experts hoped that Foshan could regularly publicize traditional culture among young people.

From the report, experts also concluded that young children's psychological problems have a close connection with their parents' educational methods. Therefore, experts suggested the federation should make efforts to publicize scientific educational ideas and methods while leading parents to pay attention to caring for their children's psychological development. It is necessary to strengthen professional psychological guidance for youngsters and the local government should build more psychological counseling centers as well, experts maintained.
