Top Leaders Attend Congress of Returned Overseas Chinese

More than 1,100 representatives, including celebrities and newly returned overseas Chinese, gathered in Beijing to attend the eighth national congress of returned overseas Chinese and their relatives which opened Tuesday.

Nine members of the Standing Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee Political Bureau -- Hu Jintao, WuBangguo, Wen Jiabao, Jia Qinglin, Li Changchun, Xi Jinping, Li Keqiang, He Guoqiang and Zhou Yongkang -- were present at the meeting.

The congress, running from July 14 to 17, will review the work of the All-China Federation of Returned Overseas Chinese over the past five years, amend its constitution, elect a new term of leadership and award those making great contributions to the country's development.

The representatives also include people working at the front line and 119 newly returned overseas Chinese.

Representing the CPC Central Committee, Wang Zhaoguo, member of the Political Bureau, said in addressing the congress that returned overseas Chinese and their relatives had made extraordinary contributions to the nation's revival and the people's well-being in the past six decades.

The country's future prosperity need unremitting contribution by returned overseas Chinese and their relatives as well as other overseas Chinese, said Wang, who is also Vice Chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress.

He called on returned and overseas Chinese to actively engage in China's construction and modernization and contribute more to promoting the nation's peaceful reunification and maintaining solidarity of all ethnic groups.

The congress is held once every five years. The first congress was held in October 1956 in Beijing. The National Committee of the All-China Federation of Returned Overseas Chinese is responsible for implementing the congress resolutions and deciding on important affairs.
