A traffic accident occurred at about 9:00pm on Wednesday on a section of Changledonghe Road downhill from Heshang township government.
According to nearby villagers, a muck truck collided with an electric vehicle and the woman rider fell under the rear wheel and was left in a serious condition. A 4-year-old boy with an injured left arm squatted on the side of the road and burst out crying.
An ambulance arrived and Cao Lulu, a nurse in the emergency department of Changle District Hospital, carried the child to hospital.
Cao told reporters that when she arrived at the scene of the accident, the woman under the wheel had stopped breathing. The boy had a serious arm injury and needed to be taken to hospital.
No other family members were present at that time and when faced with an examination by a male doctor, the boy was unwilling to cooperate.
Cao decided to pick the boy up and said to him with open arms, "Good boy, come on, shall we go to the hospital?" The child listened, allowed the nurse to pick him up and take him to the hospital.
"In the ambulance, the boy buried his head in my arms. He kept crying because he was suffering from great pain. I talked to him, and tried to divert his attention. And he stopped crying when he was comforted," Cao said.
When they arrived at the hospital, the boy was still unwilling to leave Cao, so Cao held the boy throughout his examination hemostasis treatment.
After a while, the boy's grandmother rushed to the hospital, but she was too old to carry the little boy. Cao took the boy to the pediatric department on the fourth floor of the inpatient department to continue his treatment.
Later, the child's father also came and transferred the child to another hospital for treatment.
In response to the praise from netizens, Cao said that this just was what she should do as a nurse. She felt it normal and that there was nothing particularly worthy of praise.
It is understood that the woman driver killed was the boy's aunt. The villagers near the incident reported that the section of the road was full of rocks, and it is advised that the relevant departments strengthen the management of the road condition.
Cao also won praise from her colleagues in the emergency department of Changle District Hospital. Lin Yu, a doctor, said that Cao has been working in the department for more than two years and she is optimistic, cheerful and lively, and gets along well with her colleagues.
Cao has two puppies, one of which is a stray dog which she has adopted and kept for more than five years.
