Glass Ceiling Confines Women Professionals in Colleges and Hospitals

More than 80% of women Beijing residents have suffered gender-prejudice, yet numbers of high-level women professionals grow every year, according to the recently released Beijing Women's Federation "Research Report on the Professional Development Conditions of High-level Women Professionals in Beijing."

The report, which covered 785 women with assistant senior professional titles from 14 colleges and 14 hospitals in Beijing, shows that women account for more than half of all high-level professionals in colleges and hospitals, and that their numbers grow every year. The proportion of women drops, however, among the higher echelons.

The research also finds that the "family vs. career" conflict has greater significance for women than men, because childbearing loses women at least two years of professional development. Career women often find themselves under huge pressure that impairs their quality of life. When asked what factors most influenced their careers, 32.7% of women interviewed said "career pressure," and 19.7% "the family (meaning marital relationships and children's education)."
