A delegation led by Shen Yueyue, President of the All-China Women's Federation (ACWF), extended greetings and brought warmth to rural women and children in Pingshun County, Changzhi City, in North China's Shanxi Province, on December 18. Huang Xiaowei, Vice-President and First Member of the Secretariat of the ACWF, also participated in the event.
They brought the locals the supplies provided by some charity projects, including the Health Express for Mothers and the Children's Happy Home.
Shen urged the women's federations at all levels to work hard under the guidance of Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era, and to win the final battle against poverty in a high-quality way. She also called on the women's federations to give full play to the role of family, family education and family traditions in the grass-roots social governance, so as to contribute their strength in building a moderately well-off society in an all-round way as scheduled.

The delegation braved the chilly wind to visit Xigou Village, where Shen talked with Wang Huali, a local woman, and was concerned about her family's income, children's education and their health conditions. Wang is a cleaner of the village, and her husband runs a small clinic. Shen encouraged the couple to better serve the villagers and motivate their children to study hard and become useful persons for society and the country.
Shen also learned the details about the free screening of cervical and breast cancers and the health conditions of the local women in the village. She said it is important to provide better healthcare to impoverished people. She also urged efforts in promoting health education in villages, families, schools, popularizing knowledge on health, and guiding women to build a healthy lifestyle.
Zhang Aixiu, an impoverished woman in Shixia Village, introduced the tremendous changes brought by the poverty-alleviation team while guiding Shen to see the kitchen and heating facilities in her house.
Zhang said that local women actively participate in activities such as singing ode to the motherland, looking for "the most beautiful families" and training on planting Chinese herbal medicine.
"It's more and more convenient for us to see a doctor, " Zhang said, "Now the minor illness can be treated within the village and the severe diseases can be treated within the county."
With the help of the government's technical support, Guo Wenxiu, a local villager who plants codonopsis pilosula (a kind of Chinese herbal medicine) and a kind of peony (for producing edible oil) in Shixia, has increased her family's annual income from nearly 3,000 yuan (US $428.6) to more than 10,000 yuan (US $1,428.6).
"In the past, we knew little about planting skills. We have improved our skills and the yield has been greatly increased, after we participated in the training," Guo said with excitement.
During a gathering with local women and officials of the local women's federation, Shen listened to their suggestions on improving the activities organized by the federation. She urged the federations' officials to care about impoverished women's families, offer customized and regular services to them, and guide the local women to create a better life with wisdom and hard work.
