Huang Xiaowei, vice-president and first member of the Secretariat of the All-China Women's Federation (ACWF), recently gave a speech in which she said women on both sides of the Taiwan Straits should unite more closely in regard to a new historic starting point.

Huang delivered her remarks during a gathering held on January 2 at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the issuing of the Message to Compatriots in Taiwan.

She said women should make such efforts since they are an indispensable strength in advancing the process toward the peaceful reunification of China.

The Central Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC) has developed such policies concerning the work on Taiwan affairs over the past 40 years, Huang explained, and women have actively participated in and contributed greatly to the development of cross-Straits relations.

Over the years, the ACWF and officials from women's federations at regional levels have studied and implemented the CPC Central Committee policies concerning the work on Taiwan affairs, especially the important relevant remarks given by General Secretary of the Party Central Committee Xi Jinping on the topic.

These policies and remarks have served as a bridge between women across the Straits and have endeavored to create a force that promotes patriotism and national reunification, commented Huang.

Guided by the slogan "We are all from the same family", the ACWF has for 10 years organized its Sisters of the Same Family campaign on various themes such as environmental protection and family. The campaign is run on the sideline of the annual Straits Women's Forum.

The ACWF has also strengthened work among different groups of people including members of women's organizations, female college students and Taiwan residents who have visited the mainland for the first time.

The federation promotes exchanges between communities, families and social organizations on both sides of the Straits and has established a long-term mechanism, said Huang.

She said the ACWF has also enhanced exchanges with women's organizations in Taiwan, including groups for new immigrants; held innovation and entrepreneurship forums for female students across the Straits; and, organized children's exchange activities.

Women's federations at municipal and provincial levels have organized various cross-Straits women's exchanges on the basis of culture, business and other topics.

Huang further stressed that exchanges at different levels between women in the mainland and in Taiwan should be promoted in diverse areas. Cooperation should be deepened in terms of promoting Chinese culture and taking advantage of women's unique roles in social and family life.

She said that ACWF will continue to provide assistance to more Taiwan women who study, work and start businesses in the mainland as an effort to promote the peaceful development of cross-Straits relations in the new era.

To conclude, Huang said women on both sides of the Taiwan Straits must resolutely oppose "Taiwan independence" and work hand-in-hand to build a community with a shared future and strive for national rejuvenation.
