In celebration of International Women's Day (March 8), the Women's General Association of Macao (WGAM) hosted a ceremony on February 27, 2018. The board members and supervisors, of the General Association's 36th-term leadership, assumed their posts during the ceremony.
Established in 1950, the Women's General Association of Macao is the oldest women's organization, with the best influence and representation, in the Macao Special Administrative Region (SAR). The organization, which has nearly 30,000 members, maintains its tradition of showing abiding love for both the motherland and the Macao SAR. In addition, the organization unites women, from all walks of life, in their participation in social affairs, protects women's rights and interests and provides various services to women and children.
He Dingyi, member of the standing committee of the Women's General Association of Macao, was reelected the General Association's president. In her speech during the ceremony, she said the Women's General Association of Macao would study carefully the spirit of the 19th National Congress of the Communist Party of China (CPC), which was held in Beijing in October 2017. Members of the association would make efforts, together, to support Macao SAR's chief executive and government in implementing policies in accordance with the law, and the members would play their roles in uniting women, safeguarding women's rights and building a prosperous region.
Chui Sai On, Chief Executive of the Macao SAR, attended the ceremony. He highly praised the General Association's contributions in protecting women and children's rights and interests. He promised the government of Macao SAR would strengthen talented women's cultivation, increase women's opportunities in managing economic and social affairs, improve medical care provided to women and children, improve their health and lives, build harmonious families and promote women's comprehensive development.
Xia Jie, Vice-President and Member of the Secretariat of the All-China Women's Federation, also delivered a speech during the ceremony. She spoke of the "spirit of Macao," demonstrated by the Women's General Association of Macao in showing its love for their country and region, caring for women and children and serving local social groups. Xia said she believed the newly elected leadership would deepen its understanding, promotion and implementation of Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era, and the spirit of the 19th CPC National Congress. She hoped the General Association would unite women, from all segments of society in the Macao SAR, to strengthen their national consciousness and patriotism, participate in the development of their motherland, and make unremitting efforts to build a promising future of Macao and to realize the Chinese Dream of national rejuvenation.
