The All-China Women's Federation (ACWF) held a work conference in association with China Life Insurance Group on July 31 to discuss issues relating to women's poverty alleviation.

The event took place in Zhongwei, a city in northwest China's Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region.

The conference has been taken as an opportunity to implement President Xi Jinping's remarks made during a recent symposium on addressing poverty alleviation in the country's most affected areas

Attendees at the meeting focused on healthcare insurance and measures to reduce and treat women's breast and cervical cancers, in particular.

Yang Liu, member of the Secretariat of the ACWF; and, Xu Haifeng, vice-president of the China Life Insurance Group, addressed the meeting.

According to Yang, about 40 percent of poverty in China is directly related to disease and a disproportionate number of those affected are women.

Living in acutely poverty-stricken areas, women are more likely to contract gynaecological diseases and have greater difficulties in lifting themselves out of poverty, said Yang.

She stressed that women's federations must deeply learn and implement President Xi's remarks on poverty relief and development and highlighted the significance of assisting women in improving their conditions.

Later, Yang spoke highly of specific measures related to poverty alleviation taken by local women's federations in Ningxia; cities and, in other provinces such as southeast China's Fujian, east China's Shandong and southwest China's Sichuan.

She further urged federations at all levels to strengthen their related publicity work, utilize various media outlets and develop training sessions to raise women's health awareness.

Highlighting the prevention of breast and cervical cancers, officials should make great efforts to win local Party and authority's support; promote free screenings of the two cancers into the government's work planning; improve the mechanism for medical insurance; and, assist and encourage the provision of effective healthcare services.

In addition, local federations should further strengthen their cooperation with related departments, social organizations and charitable enterprises, consistently exploring innovative measures to resolve poverty issues related to illness, thereby benefiting more women in future.
