Organizers invited participants of the 2016 W20 Meeting, taking place in Xi'an, northwest China's Shaanxi Province, to visit the Yongning Gate in the south of the city on the evening of May 24, and attend a welcome ceremony arranged according to traditions dating from the Tang Dynasty (618-907).

The city wall of Xi'an was established in the third year of the Hongwu Period of the Ming Dynasty (1370 A.D.). It measures 12 meters high, 18 meters wide at the base and 15 meters wide at the top. The structure is 13.79 kilometers long and has four gates: Changle Gate in the east, Anding Gate in the west, Yongning Gate in the south and Anyuan Gate in the north. Yongning Gate, established in 582 A.D., symbolizes the people's wish for keeping the ancient city peaceful and safe.

According to historic records, when honored guests arrived at the entrance, several armored guards would stand at both their sides, chanting "Open the Gate!" Guided by young women holding lanterns, officers would present the "welcoming wines" and issue a "visa" to each guest. Then, the guests would be allowed to walk on a red carpet, which was guarded by the officers and maids, to enter the city.
