South Korean Plastic Surgery Market Thrives, but Faces Challenges

In 2013, 24,075 foreigners underwent plastic surgery in South Korea, among which 16,282 were from China, accounting for 67.6 percent of the total, according to statistics released by the Ministry of Public Health of South Korea.

In 2009, only 791 Chinese citizens went to South Korea to receive plastic surgery. However, five years later, this number increased by 20 times. Following Chinese citizens, Japanese citizens account for 5.7 percent of the total, Americans for 4.3 percent and Russians 3.6 percent. In 2011, Japanese citizens accounted for 15.1 percent, and subsequently the number has been decreasing year on year.

As South Korea has successfully promoted Korean culture overseas across Asia, an increasing number of foreign nationals are eager to obtain the noted, plastic-surgery-heavy look of Korean celebrities. However, many problems have emerged in the plastic surgery market in South Korea. For example, some agents charge unreasonable commission fees; some hospitals use junior medical staff to replace senior medical staff while other hospitals make misleading advertisements.

If the South Korean Government dose not take more measures to regulate plastic surgery hospitals, foreign patients will not be as eager to undergo operations in the country. The South Korean media suggested that the government should take concrete measures to regulate the market.
