China Women's Development Foundation (CWDF) founded a brocade-making cooperative in Wuzhishan, south China's Hainan Province, to coincide with the opening of the Boao Forum for Asia Annual Conference 2018, recently.
The charity initiative is designed to revitalize the local economy and build the attractive island of Hainan into an international tourism destination.
Leaders from CWDF and the New Silk Road Group attended the event and delivered keynote speeches.
To pass down the traditional handicraft of brocade, Li Bing, president and CEO of the group, announced plans to donate two million yuan to the project.
So far, over 20 handicraft cooperatives in eight provinces, including southwest China's Yunnan and Guizhou, and northwest China's Qinghai, and have already been put into active operation with over 10,000 jobs created.
CWDF intends to establish a further 100 such charity organizations across the country in the coming three years, said a spokesperson.
