Several photos of Fan Bingbing dressed-up as the character Empress Wu Zetian for the eponymous TV series has been released, along with 12 other characters.

Produced by Talent Soundo Film, China Film Group and Fan Bingbing Studio, the TV series has a budget of nearly 300 million yuan (US$ 49.53 million). Fan Bingbing will play Empress Wu Zetian from young to old. She says this role is one she has always dreamed of playing.

Other actors and actresses starring in the TV series include Zhang Fengyi, Aarif Rahman, Janine Chang, Wu Xiubo, Kathy Chow, Li Chen, Zhang Ting, Li Liren, Viann Zhang, Li Jie, and Wang Huichun.

The release of the photos is a gift sent by the crew, who are currently shooting the TV series, to the TV audience on occasion of the Chinese lunar new year.

"Playing Wu Zetian must be every actress' dream. She lived for her ambitions and love," Fan says.

In the early 1990s, actress Liu Xiaoqing played Wu Zetian in another eponymously titled TV series directed by Chen Jialin, which has become well-known by Chinese people around the world. It was first broadcast on CCTV in China in 1995 and subsequently aired by television stations in other countries.

Fan said "Every generation has different interpretations and I hope I can interpret the character in my own way."

Empress Wu Zetian was a Chinese sovereign, who ruled officially under the name of her self-proclaimed "Zhou Dynasty", from 690 to 705. She was the only woman to rule China in her own right.

Besides her career as a political leader, Wu Zetian also had an active family life. Although family relationships sometimes became problematic, Wu Zetian was the mother of three sons who served stints as emperors, and one of her grandsons became the famous emperor Xuanzong of the restored Tang Dynasty, ruling during its "Golden Age".

Fan Bingbing, born in 1981, is a Chinese actress, singer and producer. She was born in Qingdao but was raised in Yantai. She graduated from Shanghai Xie Jin Film and Television Art College and Shanghai Theatre Academy.

Fan has received awards from the Tokyo International Film Festival, Beijing College Student Film Festival, Golden Horse Film Festival and Hundred Flowers Awards, among others. She was ranked first on the "50 Most Beautiful People in China" list in 2010 by the newspaper Beijing News. Due to her appearances on the red carpet, movie premieres, and fashion shows, the media describes her as a fashion icon.

Fan rose to stardom in 1999 for her supporting role as Jin Suo in the first two seasons of the Chinese television series Princess Pearl, which were adapted from Taiwanese writer Chiung Yao's novels. Before Princess Pearl, she had played minor roles in other projects for almost two years.
