"The women's federation gave us timely assistance. My mother has suffered from cervical cancer for more than two years. The whole family's income is from farming and we have no spare money to see a doctor. Thanks to the 10,000 yuan (US $1,429) given by the women's federation, my mother can go to hospital again for treatment," said the daughter of a woman in a village in Tuoketuo County, in Hohhot, capital city of Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region.
A fund-issuing ceremony for assistance to impoverished women with cervical and breast cancers (also called the "two cancers") organized by the All-China Women's Federation (ACWF) was held recently in the county.
"So far, Hohhot has assisted 978 impoverished women with the 'two cancers' by distributing assistance funds of 5.95 million yuan (US $850,000). Unlike other regions, in addition to applying special assistance funds from the ACWF, the Hohhot Women's Federation has distributed more than 1.6 million yuan (US$22,850) for six consecutive years to assist 541 impoverished rural women with the 'two cancers,'" said Yun Yumei, Deputy Director of Hohhot Women and Children Work Committee and President of the Hohhot Women's Federation.
The city has carried out free screenings for the "two cancers" for 310,000 rural women, among whom 230,000 women received free screening for cervical cancer and 85,000 women received free screening for breast cancer. All diagnosed patients with the "two cancers" have received treatment.
The city's women's federation has taken effective measures for many years to enhance free screening and strengthen the publicity of the idea of "early detection, early treatment," ensuring that more impoverished women with the "two cancers" can benefit from free screening and assistance.
