Typhoon Lekima has wreaked havoc since making landfall in Zhejiang Province in East China on August 10 before traveling north and landing in East China's Shandong Province on August 11.
To protect people's lives and property, women volunteers and women's federations at all levels in typhoon-affected cities throughout Zhejiang and Shandong provinces have been providing disaster relief.
In Dongying City in Shandong, Zhang Guohong, member of the village committee of Timen Village and president of the village's women's federation, worked on evacuating and relocating people affected by the typhoon. She also sent meals for emergency personnel on duty. Members of the women's federation of Wenchang Community accompanied the elderly who refused to evacuate to ensure their safety.
Members of the Women's Federation of Yantai City and other women volunteers made good preparation for the typhoon, including conducting investigation of the drainage facilities in the city, reminding seafood farmers to reinforce fishing sheds, eliminating potential hazards of housing, landslides and mudslides, and working on people evacuation.
In addition, volunteers and members of the women's federations at all levels in Weifang, Weihai and Dezhou cities in Shandong Province also made utmost efforts to combat the typhoon, relocating affected people, and ensuring logistics and services.
Many areas in Zhejiang Province were also severely affected by the super typhoon Lekima. The Women's Federation of Wenzhou City issued an initiative on August 11, calling on all women, women volunteers and women's federations at all levels to participate in disaster relief and post-disaster recovery and reconstruction.
Kangning Hospital in Wenzhou City responded to the call quickly by organizing psychological crisis intervention volunteers to go to Yongjia County, Yueqing City and Linhai City to provide psychological assistance. On the morning of August 11, receiving the signal for help from the women's federations of Dajing Town and Yandang Town (in Yueqing City), the Yueqing Women's Federation organized more than 100 volunteers from the grassroots-level women's federations and women's social organizations in less than an hour to provide disaster relief and services at Dajing Primary School, expressway entrances and the railway station.
In Linhai City, the women entrepreneurs' association organized its members to send materials and personnel to the relocation service site.
Xianju County (in Taizhou City) was severely hit by the typhoon with its food, water and electricity supply cut and roads blocked. Women's federation and women volunteers in the county acted immediately, organizing evacuation, donation and psychological counseling to help those affected.
