A 6.0-magnitude earthquake hit Changning County in Yibin, Southwest China's Sichuan Province on June 17. After the earthquake, the All-China Women's Federation (ACWF) responded immediately.
Shen Yueyue, Vice-Chairperson of the NPC Standing Committee and President of the ACWF, and Huang Xiaowei, Secretary of the Leading Party Members' Group of the ACWF and Vice-President and First Member of the Secretariat, were concerned about the people, especially women and children, in the earthquake-stricken areas.
They required the Women's Federation of Sichuan Province to do their best to provide disaster relief and care services for local women and children.
Women's ederations, at all levels in Sichuan Province, have carried out earthquake relief aid quickly, offering food, water, quilts and other materials urgently needed in the area since the earthquake. Tents for evacuated children were set up overnight and the volunteers helped care for the children.
The China Children and Teenagers' Fund (CCTF) and the China Women's Development Foundation (CWDF), two foundations affiliated to the ACWF, implemented disaster emergency assistance immediately after the quake.
After two days of emergency mobilization of social forces, the CCTF raised 1.53 million yuan (US $222,619) of relief materials on June 18, including soap, pure water and nutritious food for children, which were then transported to the disaster-hit area.
In addition, the CCTF allocated 10 large tents and 500 sets of children's emergency rescue packages to set up a temporary Children's Home on June 20 and organized local volunteers to accompany children.
The CWDF raised a total of 750,000 yuan (US $109,170) for disaster relief through Alipay and Tencent's public welfare platforms. The first 2,750 parcels of daily necessities for mothers, worth 450,000 yuan (US $65,502), were raised by the CWDF and sent from Chengdu (capital of Sichuan Province) and Beijing on June 20 to Changning County and Gongxian County, the two areas most severely affected by the earthquake. The assistance materials for local mothers arrived on June 21.
The CWDF and its psychological assistance partner, the Institute of Psychology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, sent psychological assistance experts to the earthquake-hit area to work with local personnel to establish a psychological assistance work station for women and children affected by the disaster.
The experts will offer year-long psychological intervention, group psychological counseling and regional psychological assistance to the locals, and help build a local psychological assistance team.
The staff from the CWDF and the CCTF said that they would continue to pay attention to the earthquake-stricken area, and make sure affected women and children would get the relief materials they need.
Meanwhile, the two foundations will disclose information to the public and give feedback to the donors on their allocation of relief goods.
