The local government in Yiyuan County in east China's Shandong Province, has greatly accelerated the process of targeted poverty-alleviation over the past few years, say officials.

In some cases, the government has encouraged the wives of migrant workers to engage in rural poverty-alleviation projects alongside others from impoverished families.

Many mothers in Yiyuan are employed in the workshops of relevant poverty-alleviation projects to help them increase their incomes, whilst they are still able to manage household chores at home.
