The All-China Women's Hand-Knitting Association, in partnership with the Taobao Foundation, jointly launched a charitable project on October 28 aimed at helping local impoverished women learn craft skills.

To mark the beginning of the project, organizers inaugurated a special hand-knitting training class in the village of Jinhua, east China's Zhejiang Province.

The Tabao Foundation, an affiliate of the Red Cross Society of China, plans to provide 5 million yuan (U.S. $ 737,900) in the next three years to carry out further such training classes for 2,000 impoverished women in rural and urban areas across the country.

In addition, other charitable enterprises are also set to join the scheme and help women involved become proficient in at least one manual skill, in order to help them find employment and increase their incomes.

According to the poverty alleviation objectives put forward in the country's 13th Five-Year Plan, China will help all affected citizens improve their economic situation and enjoy essential social services by 2020.

As one of the main women's poverty alleviation campaigns, the latest project is also designed to help women by providing entrepreneurship training sessions. The service will furthermore seek to address some of the problems associated with of China's so-called "left-behind population," said officials, referring to rural children who have been left behind whilst their parents move to urban areas for work.

The chief of the Taobao Foundation said the launch of the women's hand-knitting campaign widens their scope and they hope to help women with special talents in e-commerce to improve life for their families.

At the same day, Shi Dongwei, vice-president of Alibaba Group, Su Yan, director of the Red Cross Society of China, and Lv Fuling, vice-president of the All-China Women's Hand-Knitting Association, awarded three Zhejiang villages, including Juxi Village of Pan'an County in the city of Jinhua, as demonstration sites for women's poverty alleviation in the province.
