Authorities from the Working Committee of Children and Women of Beijing's Dongcheng District and the local women's federation held an interview to mark the 20th anniversary of the implementation of gender equality as a basic State policy, on November 25.

Attendees ranging from entrepreneurs and scholars to ordinary parents were invited to exchange and share their thoughts on the relationship between women and economy, environment and culture, as well as on important issues concerning women's rights.

With dialogues between both men and women on the day, a picture was built up showing the changes in women's status and their development over the past two decades through the pioneering policy. Moreover, attendees agreed that appreciation, protection, respect and equality were the top needs craved in sound and harmonious gender relationships, according to organizers.

During the current 12th Five-Year Plan period, officials in Dongcheng District have strengthened government and social efforts in promoting women's development. For example, women's political representation in the region has already far exceeded the 30 percent target set in the national development agreement, and officials hope that further achievements can be made.
