Three new innovative forms of physical education (PE) courses were presented at Shanghai Zhixing High School in Baoshan district, thepaper.cn reported Tuesday. One is a basketball course for primary school students; another is a soccer course for middle-school boys; the third is a martial arts class for middle-school girls.

Notably, Shanghai is the first Chinese city to reform its physical education curriculum. According to the education administration of Baoshan, seven schools in the district have started separating male and female students during PE lessons.

The municipal education commission is promoting PE course reform citywide, and aims to make primary school PE more engaging and middle school PE more diverse.
