The fourth China-France Symposium on Fighting Against Domestic Violence was convened in Beijing on November 22.

Jointly organized by the All-China Women's Federation (ACWF), the French Embassy in China and China Women's University (CWU), the high-level seminar drew the attendance of nearly 100 professionals and grassroots workers involved in the field of anti-domestic violence studies from two countries.

Lu Yamin, vice-director of the ACWF's Liaison Department; Barbe, commissioner of the French Embassy's Department of Government Cooperation; and Li Mingshun, secretary of the CWU Party Committee, attended the gathering and gave speeches.

Lu talked about the efforts and contributions made by the ACWF and regional women's federations to the progress of gender equality promotion and China's legislation on domestic violence. She emphasized that China should learn more from French practices in the protection of women's legal rights and interests, and strengthen bilateral cooperation and exchanges in the promotion of gender equality and the realization of the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals.

Barbe explained that the protection of women's rights and interests is an important component of French foreign diplomacy, and urged all concerned sides to unite and think about how to better guarantee women's rights and interests.

Li gave an interpretation of the characteristics and values of China's anti-domestic violence law and stressed that the promulgation of such a law has closely followed the development of an international trend and enriched the measures adopted by the international community in the battle against domestic violence.

Moreover, French experts demonstrated the practices and achievements made by their nation's judicial system in the implementation of a restraining order scheme, the training of relevant practitioners, and the promotion of cooperation on anti-domestic violence.

For instance, Magelli Jose, deputy prosecutor from the Tribunal de Grande Instance (the High Court) in Paris, explained the importance of the implementation of personal safety protection orders and introduced France's practical measures to train judicial officials and ensure efficiency.

For their part, Chinese experts mainly introduced the country's efforts and practices in anti-domestic violence law implementation.

Chen Min, a researcher from the Institute of Law in China's Supreme People's Court, stressed the importance of inter-department cooperation and gave an analysis of the reasons behind the current problem of inefficient cooperation.

Attendees held an intensive discussion and reached a consensus on the judicial definition of domestic violence, the preventive measures to curb domestic violence, the applicability and implementation of restraining orders, and the building of inter-institutional cooperation in an effort to eradicate relevant violence.

They also called on people to make full use of laws to protect them from domestic violence and work together to realize gender equality and end domestic violence.
