China Women's University (CWU) and the branch of the Red Cross Society of China (RCSC) in Chaoyang district of Beijing jointly held a themed promotional gathering on May 7 to commemorate the 71st World Red Cross and Red Crescent Day.

The event aimed to promote the spirit of "humanity, philanthropy and devotion," increase the RCSC's social influence, and rally more support from the public in the assistance to others upon the celebration of annual Red Cross Day which falls on May 8.

It drew the attendance of Li Mingshun, secretary of the CWU Party Committee; Li Junjie, deputy mayor of Chaoyang District People's Government; Mu Yandong, vice-chairperson of Chaoyang District People's Congress; officials from the RCSC's branch in Chaoyang; student representatives and local residents.

Organizers opened the celebration by presenting a number of sand paintings which gave an introduction to Jean Henri Dunant, the Swiss founder of the Red Cross, and the charity movement's origin and development.

Meanwhile, other forms of art performance such as sketch, singing, recitation, and mime shows were staged to help the audience learn about the Red Cross and its culture.

Along with five charity-minded enterprises, Duan Junyi a CWU student and seven other volunteers were jointly conferred with awards in recognition of their outstanding contributions to the development of Red Cross affairs and active participation in relevant activities.

In addition, five volunteers talked about their inspirational stories in the donation of bone marrow to unknown figures.
