China Women's University (CWU) and four other higher educational institutions in the sub-district of Jianguomen in Beijing jointly formed a volunteer alliance on April 20 to encourage the voluntary participation of their college students in the promotion of waste sorting amongst locals.

The alliance was established thanks to the sponsorship of the Working Committee of Communist Youth League (CYL) Affairs in Jianguomen Sub-district Office. It aims to better follow the instructions and decisions made by the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC) upon the reform of mass organizations, such as the CYL and women's federations, deepen collaborations between universities and grassroots CYL branches, strengthen the cultivation of young volunteers, and boost the level of their participation in local voluntary affairs.

Organizers had unanimously passed the charter of the alliance and list of alliance members before they inaugurated the newly founded alliance at the gathering.

Jia Bang, director of the Working Committee of Jianguomen Sub-district Office, gave a brief introduction of the region and stressed that the promotion of waste sorting would be the focus of their work this year in his speech.

For her part, Guan Lili, deputy secretary of the CYL branch in Dongcheng District of Beijing, called on college students from local universities to work together in a drive to further improve the natural environment around them.

After the conclusion of the opening ceremony, attending volunteers paid a visit to local residential communities, distributed eco-friendly garbage collectors amongst residents, and interacted with them about their participation in waste sorting in their personal lives.

Those present at the event included Wang Jing, secretary of the CYL branch of the All-China Women's Federation; officials from local authorities, and over 50 volunteers from the CWU and four other universities.
