Family life education for Chinese students urgently needs enhancing, because it is not only closely linked to the happiness of personal and family life, but it is also a social issue related to public interest, a professor with the China Women's University (CWU) said recently.

"Despite the fact that women's status in Chinese society has been raised in recent years, I am more than happy to see that they can lead a colorful spiritual life when their material living standards have significantly improved," said Sun Xiaomei.

A survey revealed that women put 80 percent of their energy into their families, however, most Chinese educational institutions have not set up family life education, seriously lagging behind China's current social development.

The CWU established a subject regarding life sciences, but Sun found that many students knew little about some basic ideas that many people see as common sense, which possibly brings negative consequence to their family and marriage life.

Individuals should attach great importance to family life education, but this issue also needs the country’s guarantee and guidance. Lots of middle and primary schools in other countries, such as America, France and Japan, have already carried out family life education to teach students knowledge of family relations, nutrition, health, clothes and dress-sense, which not only helps students handle interpersonal relationship better, but also means they can learn some life skills that will benefit them in the future.

"While I was working in Japan, my son also studied there. When Japanese children start their school education, they are required to learn some information on the school they will attend in advance and develop the habit of independence, self-reliance and self-discipline," said Sun.

Sun suffered from a serious illness in Japan. When her son read her medical examination report, he told her the matters needing attention and cooked healthy delicacies with different flavors for her. "If he had not received family life education in school, he would not have taken good care of me at that time," added Sun.

Sun said that family life education is a longstanding program and will improve the national quality of life.
