A press conference to present the achievements of the Spring Bud Project over the past 30 years, was held by the All-China Women's Federation (ACWF) and the China Children and Teenagers' Fund (CCTF) in Beijing, on October 10.
The Spring Bud Project, initiated by the CCTF in 1989, is a social welfare program to mobilize social forces to help dropout girls return to school and get better education.
Shen Yueyue, Vice-Chairperson of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC) and President of the ACWF, delivered a speech at the event.
Chen Zhili, Vice-Chairperson of the 11th NPC Standing Committee, Former President of the ACWF, and Meritorious Director-General of the CCTF, and Huang Xiaowei, Secretary of the Leading Party Members' Group of the ACWF and Vice-President and First Member of the Secretariat of the ACWF, attended the event.
Shen affirmed the fruitful achievements of the Spring Bud Project in the past 30 years, and expressed gratitude to all sectors of society who have long been supporting the program.
Shen said that over the past three decades the project has always served the CPC and the country in its overall work, carried forward the socialist core values, promoted the all-round development of girls, and followed relevant rules and regulations to help impoverished girls grow healthily and continue their studies.
She emphasized that the successful practice of the project lied in the strong leadership of the CPC and the strengths of the socialist system with Chinese characteristics.
The project proves the fact that China follows the "people-oriented" concept and adheres to the implementation of the basic national policy of equality between men and women. It also vividly epitomizes the rapid development of the charitable cause in China, Shen added.
During the conference, the CCTF released a report on the achievements of the Spring Bud Project over the past 30 years, which showed that the project has raised a total of 2.118 billion yuan (US $298.3 million) from 27.84 million social donations, funded more than 3.69 million impoverished girls to return to school, built 1,811 Spring Bud schools and compiled 2.17 million safety manuals for school girls.
In addition, the beneficiaries have expanded from girls receiving nine-year compulsory education to girls in high schools and at colleges. The scope of the project has extended to vocational education, training for Spring Bud teachers, girls' protection, caring for adolescent girls and accompanying left-behind girls.
According to the report, a large number of Spring Bud girls have studied hard so they can work diligently to serve their hometowns and society with knowledge. Many of them have become professionals in different walks of life.
The report concluded that the project was a demonstrated successful example of promoting girls' education and development in China and it has shown the world the Chinese experience of bringing together social forces to foster women through education.
At the conference, the project paid special tribute to the former leaders and seniors of the ACWF and the CCTF, including Chen Muhua, Peng Peiyun, Gu Xiulian and Chen Zhili for their guidance and strong support for the project. It also extended its gratitude to individuals, enterprises and public institutions for their generous donations.
Thirty outstanding representatives of Spring Bud girls from all over the country were awarded the "Spring Bud Stars" at the conference. Some of them are now judge, soldier, doctor, teacher, lawyer and civil servant.
The press conference also introduced the Spring Bud Project — Dream of the Future Action launched in early September. The new project, with the basic task of strengthening moral education and cultivating people, initiated five actions, including a social practice action based on research and study, an action of offering student subsidies, a safety and health action emphasizing on girls' protection, an action of offering one-on-one assistance and a public-participation action based on the platform of the Internet, to further mobilize and gather the loving hearts in society.
