The China-Russia Women's Forum, one of the activities sponsored by the All-China Women's Federation (ACWF) to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Russia, opened in Beijing, on October 27.

Participants of the event shared their opinions of the unique role of women in family and society.

Jiang Hua, Executive Vice-President of the China Association of Women Entrepreneurs, gave a speech at the forum. Jiang said that women in China were engaged in the campaign for mass entrepreneurship and innovation, and at the same time strive to stabilize and expand employment, carry out targeted poverty alleviation, and work on public-welfare undertakings, which makes them an indispensable force in the development of the national economy.

Jiang said that she hoped to connect women entrepreneurs, experts and scholars from both countries through online platforms so they could have more in-depth, extensive exchanges and cooperation in education, culture, agriculture, medical care and science and technology.

Larisa Popovich, Member of the council of the Women's Union of Russia and Director of the Institute for Health Economics of Higher School of Economics, said that Russia and China were both facing severe challenges brought by the aging of their populations and low birth rates. The two countries should exchange experiences and work together to meet the challenges and achieve the goals of improving people's health.

Lu Shizhen, Executive Director of the China Family Education Society, said in her speech that the status of Chinese women in families has been greatly improved thanks to the laws protecting women's rights and interests. Lu said women played an irreplaceable role in handling family affairs, educating children, and dealing with family relationships. She added that they also exerted a crucial influence on building children's values, creating good family atmosphere, and cultivating and inheriting family traditions.

"I come from the Amurskaya Oblast of Russia, which is adjacent to Northeast China's Heilongjiang Province. To date, we have had exchanges with Chinese women's federations for 20 years," said Zhakkelina Orlova, President of the Women's Union of Amurskaya Oblast, Russia.

"Chinese scholars and teachers come to teach at the Confucius Institute of Blagoveschensk State Pedagogical University, and students from Russia also study at Heilongjiang University. Many women entrepreneurs, children, and sports delegations from Heilongjiang Province visit Amurskaya every year," Orlova continued.

Zhang Shijuan, a researcher at the Women's Federation of Heilongjiang Province, said at the forum that the province would give full play to its geographical advantages to contribute to the China-Mongolia-Russia Economic Corridor under the Belt and Road Initiative and serve as an important platform for China to expand cooperation with Russia and Northeast Asia.

Zhang added that under the leadership of the Heilongjiang Provincial CPC Committee and the ACWF, the province's women's federation has carried out various people-to-people exchanges and strengthened cooperation between women and women's organizations with other countries.
