On November 25, a handover ceremony for maternal and infant items donated by the All-China Women's Federation to Sri Lanka was held at the Sri Lankan Parliament. Ambassador H.E. Qi Zhenhong, Hon. Jagath Wickramaratne, Speaker of the Parliament, Hon. Saroja Paulraj, Minister of Women and Child Affairs, Hon. Hemali Weerasekara, Deputy Chairperson of Committees, attended the ceremony.
Ambassador Qi said, we gather here with immense joy to witness the official handover of these women's and children's items, which carry the profound friendship of the Chinese people. During the visit to Sri Lanka in 2023, Hon. Shen Yiqin, State Councilor and President of the All-China Women's Federation, pledged to donate maternal and infant items to Sri Lanka. This donation is not only a transfer of material support but also a connection of hearts, bearing the friendly sentiments of the Chinese people toward the people of Sri Lanka. Women are a vital force in promoting social progress, and children are the future and hope of the world. Focusing on the development and well-being of women and children is to sow the seeds of peace and development. We hope these items can contribute to improving the living conditions of women and children in need, and convey warmth and strength. We hope to take this opportunity to further deepen exchanges and cooperation between the people of our two countries, especially in the field of women and children's affairs, and work together to create a better and more prosperous future.
Hon. Wickramaratne expressed his heartfelt gratitude for China's generous assistance, noting that the supplies vividly demonstrate the unbreakable friendship between the two countries and China's sincere concern for the Sri Lankan people. China has long provided substantial and valuable support for Sri Lanka's economic and social development, and this donation once again proves that China is a trustworthy and reliable partner of Sri Lanka. He believes that these supplies will effectively benefit Sri Lankan women and children, improving their living conditions.
Hon. Paulraj thanked both teams for their hard work, stating that these items would have a positive impact on improving the health and education of women and children in Sri Lanka, not only provided material support but also offered significant moral encouragement, demonstrating the spirit of solidarity and mutual assistance between Sri Lanka and China. She looks forward to more practical cooperation between the two countries in the field of women and children's development in the future.
The donated items mainly included furniture and appliances for mother and baby rooms, as well as maternal and child health products such as diapers and sanitary napkins. The ceremony was held in a warm and friendly atmosphere, and both sides exchanged donation letters and receipt certificates.
