'Mother Smile Operation' Benefits Children with Cleft Palates in Gansu

The latest six-day campaign by the charity medical program Mother Smile Operation, organized by the China Women's Development Foundation (CWDF), will deliver free consultations and repair operations for children with cleft lip and palates in northwest China's Gansu Province, from April 18-23.

Vice-President of Gansu Women's Federation Zhang Xinlan, initiator of the program and doctor Han Kai, Mao Yijia, vice-president of the First Hospital of Lanzhou University Donggang Branch, Executive Vice-President Yu Linghui and Vice-President Li Yingqiang of the hospital attended the opening of the latest campaign in the morning on April 19 in Lanzhou, capital city of Gansu Province.

Since the first visit of the project's medical staff to Gansu in 1999, they have carried out seven activities in Lanzhou to help children with cleft lips or cleft palates so far. In total, 88 local children under 10 years of age with cleft lips or cleft palates received free corrective operations in 2016. This year, Gansu Women's Development Foundation recorded 550 local infants and children aged from 3 to 18 months with cleft lips or cleft palates and provided the list of recipients to the charity medical staff of the campaign.

Zhang spoke highly of the charity medical program Mother Smile Operation at the opening ceremony. More than 60 charity medical workers from all over the country offer free consultations and repair operations for local infants and children with cleft lips or cleft palate after the ceremony.
