Five mobile clinics under the Health Express for Mothers Project set off on November 29, 2013, for grassroots medical institutions in five poverty-stricken counties and cities in south China's Hainan Province, including Dongfang City and Ledong County, to provide medical services to local rural women.
This is the third batch of mobile clinics to be released in the province. The 15 existing mobile clinics have been circulating in the province's 11 poverty-stricken counties and cities since August 2011, providing free health consultations to needy women, distributing free medicines and publicity materials, offering free physical examinations, sending pregnant women to and from hospitals, and holding training sessions for grassroots medical workers.
In the past two years, 63 charity medical consultations have been held in the province, benefiting 18,000 rural women. A total of 54,000 women have undergone physical examinations and breast and cervical screenings and 2,876 medical workers have received training. In addition, 683 pregnant women have received services and medicines worth 420,000 yuan (US$ 68,922).
The Health Express for Mothers Project, sponsored by the All-China Women's Federation and the National Working Committee for Children and Women under the State Council, is undertaken by the China Women's Development Foundation (CWDF) to improve access to medical care in poverty-stricken areas.
Started in 2003, it is also intended to safeguard women's interests. The program's mobile health clinics are supported by local women's federations and hospitals. Traveling through rural regions, the mobile clinics provide healthcare information, training and reference materials.
The program aims to reduce the rate of gynecological disease, lower the maternal mortality rate, and improve the health of women and children in the areas that it serves.
