A ceremony was held in Shenzhen's Pingshan New District to welcome 56 left-behind children from around China's 12 provinces on February 5, 2013. The children will spend the upcoming Spring Festival with their parents who work in the city.

The event was jointly organized by the Care Action Committee Office of Shenzhen, the Shenzhen Evening Post and the management committee and street office of Pingshan New District.

In the next four days, the children and their parents will visit the East River Column Memorial Hall, the Shenzhen Safari Park and go to the beach. They are staying at the four-star Yeste Hotel, all expenses paid. In addition, each family will be presented with goods for the Spring Festival worth 500 yuan (US$ 80.2).

At the ceremony, Director of the General Office of the Pingshan New District Wang Weixiong presented each of the children with New Year money. "I hope these children and their families will learn about our local culture through this event," said Wang.

Deputy Editor-in-chief of the Shenzhen press group and Editor-in-chief of Shenzhen Evening Post Ding Shizhao said the event was held to thank the migrant workers who have contributed a great deal to the development of Shenzhen over the past 30 years.

Liu Zhilong, from southwest China's Sichuan Province, has worked in Shenzhen since 2001 and has not returned home for the Spring Festival for several years. This year his 7-year-old son Xiao Yao came to to Shenzhen and is enjoying himself immensely during the tour with his family. "I wanted to go to these tourist sites with my son long ago, but had no chance. This time I can realize my dream," said Liu.

Wang Anping and Wang Yueying, a couple from east China's Shandong Province, have worked in Shenzen since 1999, leaving their son and daughter in their hometown. Now their children have come to Shenzhen. They were excited to be going to the Shenzhen Safari Park because they had never visited there before.

"We will always support this kind of event," said staff members from the Shenzhen Safari Park and other local enterprises. "These children's smiles have impressed us."
