Ai Jun modeling her products for her Taobao shop [taobao.com]
Wearing Many Hats
As most small shop owners operate alone, they do everything from A to Z, including taking photos of the products and uploading them, a key way to attract customers. For many sellers, refreshing their store website with more pictures, even in the middle of the night, is pretty common.
"Every night, I am busy deciding which products I'm going to upload next, taking photos of them, and working on making my website more attractive to potential customers," said Tabao shopkeeper Xixi, who once published an online post detailing how sellers stay up all night working.
Coco, who is currently running a Taobao store selling Korean and Japanese style clothing, said: "I miss my sleep. Although I hired someone to help me with customer service, things are never done. I still have to do the restocking, customer service, delivery, photography, webpage design and information editing. As a result, I have to sacrifice my sleep."
@ American Top Nail Salon: We should pay attention to what we eat and drink when work is too much, and take a rest even when not sleepy! I sincerely remind all of you: life is fragile and people now die from all kinds of reasons which did not exist in the past! Therefore we should protect our lives as we owe this to our parents and family! Again, common things like eating and sleeping are really important!
@ AprilBee: In fact, in the current society, everyone has to overdraw from the bank account of life due to the pressure to survive. Some people overdraw by a lot and others by a little. It is always easy to make money by sacrificing health, but hard to recover it back with money.
@ Manman Fiona: Many of my friends fill their lives with watching TV, staying up late, and irregular mealtimes. I sometimes ask myself, what can I really get by working overtime all the time? To earn medical fees for my future? What if I do not have a future or die tomorrow? We should seriously rethink our current lifestyles.
@ Fenng: I saw people reposted the news of the Taobao shop owner's sudden death, and almost all of them repeated the baseless assertion that the main reason was successive nights without sleep. However, I intuitively felt it didn't make sense, and then I checked her microblog, which indicated that the reason behind it might have been that she had been trying to lose weight.
Taobao's response to the incident has been to issue a statement saying that, as all industries involve a certain element of hard work, it cannot be conclusively decided that Ai Jun's death was caused by exhaustion from running her online store. They have said that actions will be taken to alert other shopkeepers to watch their health.
Later, Taobao also issued a notice to all shop owners, saying: "Like everyone else, we also feel extremely sorry and sad for the passing of such a beautiful life. No matter how important your career is, do not neglect your health, especially during these hot summer days. We want to provide more help to our shopkeepers."
An online search also reveals that Ai Jun's case is not the first to have occurred. In May of this year, a woman Taobao owner from Nanjing, in east China's Jiangsu Province, also passed away, leaving behind a one-year-old baby. In June last year, a 25-year-old woman, also from Jiangsu Province, died of exhaustion after having achieved a high Taobao rating after only two years.
If there is one thing to be learned from all these tragedies, it is that nothing is more important than life. As human beings, we have a duty to pay attention to our health and our bodies, ensuring that we prioritize good health above everything else.
