A Glimpse of Astronaut Liu Yang's Life

Liu Yang, China's first female astronaut, boarded the Shenzhou-9 spacecraft with two of her male coworkers to complete the nation's first manned space docking mission on June 16, 2012.

Liu is from Linzhou City in central China's Henan Province. She holds a bachelors degree. Born in October 1978, she joined the army in August 1997, and joined the Communist Party of China in May 2001. She is currently a fourth-level astronaut, with the rank of squadron leader, in the Astronauts' Group of the Chinese People's Liberation Army.
