Using qualitative methods, this paper develops an analysis from a gender perspective of the life course of a woman infected with AIDS. This study shows that the tradition of the gender order, especially the system of living with the husband s family and patrilineal inheritance, devastated the social conditions of the female AIDS patient. This tradition made it not only more difficult for the woman to gain support from the family and the community but also more vulnerable for her to withstand pressures from both. The paper argues for the importance of protection of the rights of women like her in the prevention and treatment of HIV/AIDS.
