A parade made up of 18 delegations marched around during the opening ceremony. It comprised nine city delegations, one Guian New Area delegation and eight university delegations.
After the parade, a series of outstanding ethnic dance, music and athletic performances were held featuring many unique talents.
During the sporting event, around two thousand athletes will compete in various categories, including archery, dragon-boat racing, bamboo drifting, stilt racing and Cuqiu (a type of traditional Chinese football). The top eight competitors in each category will win awards—one first-place prize, three second-place prizes and four third-place prizes will be awarded.
Additionally, some of the winners will be selected to join the next event.
The event is held every four years. Because there is a large number of ethnic minorities living in Guizhou-17 ethnic groups with a total population of 125 million, 36.11 percent of the provincial population, the event aims to promote traditional sports and national unity.
