A delegation led by President of Zhejiang Women's Federation Lao Hongwu visited 52 children with cleft lip and palate (CLP) at the Affiliated Hospital of Hangzhou Normal University on December 7, 2013.

Ranging in age from six months to 18 years old, the children are beneficiaries of the 'Caring CLP Children' action and were at the hospital to receive corrective surgeries. Lao presented them with toys and daily necessities and talked to them about their lives and families.

Cleft lip (cheiloschisis) and cleft palate (palatoschisis), which can also occur together as cleft lip and palate, are variations of a type of clefting congenital deformity caused by abnormal facial development during gestation. One infant out of an average of 700 infants may suffer CLP. Medical treatments for CLP can be costly.

The 'Caring CLP Children' action was jointly launched by the Zhejiang Women's Federation and Zhejiang Daily in 2012 to provide free corrective surgeries for needy children with the condition. A total of 38 children in Aksu County of northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region were chosen in 2012 for corrective surgeries and 12 have so far undergone the operations.

Lao thanked the staff members of the hospital for their efforts.

The Zhejiang Women's Federation will continue to help 30 children with CLP gain access to treatment in the first half of 2014.
