A ten-member delegation of officials from Luang Prabang Women's Federation and female entrepreneurs from the northern province of Lao People's Democratic Republic paid an official visit to Xishuangbanna Dai Autonomous Prefecture, southwest China's Yunnan Province, on September 6-9.

The visiting Laotian delegation was invited by Xishuangbanna Women's Federation with the support of local government. Their tour aimed to deepen the enthusiasm and initiatives of women's organizations from both China and relevant ASEAN's (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) countries in the construction of a China-ASEAN free trade zone and in the promotion of Lancang-Mekong Sub Regional economic cooperation, and to further bilateral ties between women's federations in Luang Prabang and Xishuangbanna.

During their four-day visit, the Laotian delegation toured local ethnic villages engaged in tourism, women and children's activity centers, the ethnic minorities museum and other places in the region, which helped them learn more about the efforts made by local people in the preservation of ecological and ethnic culture and the promotion of women and children's affairs. For instance, they gave high credit to Manzhang Village for its success in the engagement of ecological tourism and assistance of local women in improving their financial circumstances for years.

President of Xishuangbanna Women's Federation Diao Qiongying extended a warm welcome to the Laotian visitors and introduced the latest developments of bilateral cooperation and women's affairs at a gathering on September 7.

"The work on women's affairs has become increasingly important, and women are expected to undertake more responsibilities in the further development of China-Laos bilateral relations on the occasion of 55th anniversary of the establishment of bilateral ties," she continued and hoped that women's organizations from the two nations would further their mutual learning and make joint efforts in the advancement of women and children's affairs in the future.

A consensus was reached between the two sides about the establishment of an exchange mechanism, the sharing of positive experiences and practices in the promotion of women and children's affairs, and the assistance of business startups amongst women at the meeting.
