The family health skills competition jointly organized by Beijing Women's Federation (BWF) and Beijing Children's Hospital East Branch was held at the Social Service Center for Women and Children in Beijing on November 17.

Some six family groups participated in the competition, which has four parts: knowledge quiz of first aid, health, cardio-pulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and dressing wounds.

"I used to rub toothpaste on scalded areas when I was a child. I told my child to do the same, but I didn't expect it to be wrong and would potentially cause infections," said one of the participating family members.

Many participating families were surprised by the high error rates of relevant questions and realized the necessity to acquire correct first aid knowledge from professionals.

Some participants didn't know how to use the first aid materials or were unable to follow orders during the CPR and dressing wounds sections.

A couple of family groups had participated in related learning activities previously and had a good grasp of first aid knowledge and skills, according to Gao Lei, deputy director of the publicity department of BWF.

"Incorrect first aid measures may aggravate injuries, and the wrong disease treatment methods may bring danger to children. Blind spots in disease knowledge may delay children's treatment time," said He Dingxue, director of Beijing Children's Hospital East Branch.

Several Online Video Courses will be launched to propagate first aid and children's health knowledge for families after the competition, according to the organizers.

These videos are made by doctors and head nurses from Beijing Children's Hospital East Branch and have 9 themes including CPR, thermal burns and tracheal foreign bodies.

The general public can have access to these videos on the official website and official Wechat account of Beijing Children's Hospital East Branch and the official website of BWF.
