Since Liu Yongmei was elected as president of the women's federation in southwest China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region in June this year, she has paid great attention to promoting federation reform and made efforts to lift local women out of poverty.
In a recent interview, Liu talked about how the federation advances reform as well as its efforts to promote the development of women and children across the region.
When speaking of major points of the federation reform, Liu said federation officials have been thoroughly learning and implementing Chinese President Xi Jinping's spirit on the Party's mass organizations' reform. In accordance with the deployment of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, all officials have seriously fulfilled their responsibility of comprehensively carrying forward federation reform.
Specifically, the federation has taken the initiative to replace women's representative conferences at village level with women's federations at the beginning of 2017. Meanwhile, the federation has organized five inspection teams to carry out investigations of the villages in 65 towns at the middle of the year.
"At present, 90 percent of villages have finished the replacement of women's representative conferences with women's federations. A village women's federation is made up of at least 11 officials," Liu said.
Nearly 900 village and township women's federations across the region have completed the regional construction reform, Liu added.
The federation has attached great importance to its work at grassroots level in combination with the goals of the China National Program for Child Development (2011-2020). To date, around 7,016 Children's Home centers have been built in the region and brought benefits to over 2.5 million children.
The federation has always stuck to maintaining its work's practical, advanced nature of serving women and marching forward with steady progress.
"The development of Women's Home centers online has strengthened the ideological guidance of local women." At present, 14 cities and some towns have established their own accounts on WeChat (an instant messaging app in China) to carry out work and keep a connection with the masses. Accordingly, the websites of the women's federations at different levels have received more than 1,400,000 views per year.
In addition, the local women's federations at all levels have actively conducted Looking for the Most Beautiful Family Campaigns to promote shining family virtues and traditions and held other events to attract inspirational female role models to share their stories. Through the online and offline activities, women have followed the leadership of the Party with a firm determination.
The advanced nature of the federation's reform focuses on helping women find jobs and establishing their own businesses. Several major events have been held in the region to help provide women with opportunities for entrepreneurship. Furthermore, the federation has offered targeted poverty-alleviation services to the women in need.
For this, Liu gave a detailed explanation.
Efforts have been made to mobilize impoverished households to join in business bases to increase their incomes.
Housekeeping alliances have conducted training in around 5,000 poverty-stricken villages.
E-commerce platforms have been used to aid the needy women in selling their specialties to boost their incomes.
So far, around 2,683 demonstration bases for women's science and technology have been established across the region, which has led 118,000 women who were recorded into local documents of poverty to increase their revenues. More than 100,000 women have taken part in the training on housekeeping services, of which 20,000 have found jobs.
In addition, the women's federations at all levels in the region have set up a system to keep direct connections with the grassroots women. Those women who have high prestige have been asked to serve as officials of the women's federations.
The women's federation is an organization which offers assistance to women when they need at any time. It means that the reform has made significant progress with the improvement of women's recognition and trust, Liu commented.
