A photo exhibition featuring pailou - or ornamental archways - built in Macao for the grand celebrations of past National Days, opened in Beijing on December 2.

The event, hosted by the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Macao Art Association, was to mark the upcoming 20th anniversary of Macao's return to the motherland at the end of this month.

Macao citizens have a good tradition of patriotism and a love for Macao. At the founding of the People's Republic of China in 1949, they built their first archway to welcome the New China.

Between that time and the beginning of the 1970s, Macao residents set up archways and colorful plates in front of thoroughfares, associations and institutions, and staged singing and dancing performances, wishing the motherland a bright future.

The pailou projects were constructed by groups of local artists who engaged in planning, design, and mapping, as well as carpenters, painters, and porters. The exhibition displays photographs that demonstrate the charm of the architecture, hoping to help young generations learn about the patriotism of their  predecessors.

Lu Xi, president of Macao Art Association, said pailou is a comprehensive art. Using illustrations, it reflects the achievements of the motherland in various fields such as industry, agriculture, national defense, science and technology, culture, education and sports.

Some major national policies were also reflected on the architecture, Lu said, adding that Macao compatriots learned about the new achievements of the motherland and the development of New China through the pailou built for annual National Day celebrations.

These National Day archways have greatly inspired people's hearts and strengthened the patriotic consciousness of Macao compatriots. They are a vivid form of patriotic education and an indispensable part of Macao's history, he noted.

According to its organizers, the exhibition will last until December 11.
