The opening ceremony of the 2017 parent-child reading activity was hosted by the All-China Women's Federation (ACWF) and the State Administration of Press, Publication, Radio, Film and Television (SAPPRFT) on April 21, 2017. The activity was held in keeping with the State Council's plan for organizing nationwide reading activities.

The parent-child reading activity will be organized to help families cultivate socialist core values and promote good traditional culture, family traditions and scientific family education methods. The activity also helps children cultivate good reading habits.

During the opening ceremony, a video was shown to summarize and review the parent-child reading activity in 2016. Representatives of families who participated in the 2016 activity were awarded certificates of honor during the ceremony. Xu Ying and Chen Geng, promotional ambassadors of the activity, issued a parent-child reading proposal; they called on more parents to read books with their children, and urged the parents to help their children feel happiness through reading books. Li Bo, a professor at Nanjing Normal University, shared his understanding of reading books. The contents of the 2017 parent-child book-reading activity, including parent-child book-reading summer camp, were also announced.
