In 634, Songtsan Gambo, King of the Tubo Kingdom, dispatched an envoy named Gar Tongtsan to Chang'an, capital of the Tang Empire, to find out whether there was a chance for the Emperor Taizong of Tang to marry off one of his daughters to him.

The emperor was only too ready to do so, for having a son-in-law at the helm of the remote kingdom would make it not only a peaceful neighbor but a de facto tributary.

He immediately dispatched Feng Dexia as his ambassador and messenger to see Songtsan Gambo.

Feng went with Gar Tongtsan, bringing along a great amount of royal gifts, each piece being the epitome of the Tang's economic and cultural achievements.
