International Forum on Women and Sustainable Development Opens

Yesterday saw the opening ceremony in the Great Hall of the People of the International Forum on Women and Sustainable Development.

 Among those taking part in the ceremony were Chinese vice president Xi Jinping, Macedonian First Lady Maja Ivanova, wife of Prime Minister of Uganda and President of Women's League of the National Resistance Movement (NRM) Jacqueline Susan Mbabazi, UN Under-Secretary-General Sha Zukang, Vice Chairperson of China's National People's Congress Standing Committee Wang Zhaoguo, Chinese State Councilor and Director of the Working Committee on Women and Children under the State Council Liu Yandong, Vice Chairperson of China's National People's Congress Standing Committee and President of the All-China Women's Federation Chen Zhili and Mayor of Beijing Municipality Guo Jinglong.

Hosted by the All-China Women's Federation and Beijing municipality government, the forum attracted 300 representatives from 45 countries and regions, UN agencies and international organizations.

 Representatives will discuss at the three-day forum from a gender perspective the progress achieved and challenges that remain in sustainable development, review and exchange ideas and experiences with regards to women's contributions to sustainable development, and raise suggestions on reflecting the voice and needs of women at the 2012 UN conference on sustainable development.
