A senior from central China's Hunan Province returned a lost bag to its owner and refused to accept anything in return, according to a recent media report.
Wang Meie, 76, saw a cloth bag dropped from the motorbike of an old man on her way home on December 1. She shouted loudly at him, trying to alert him, but he didn't hear her, and kept moving ahead.
She kept waiting for the man on an old couch by the roadside until about 12 o'clock at noon, but he did show up. As she needed to prepare lunch for her grandson, she decided to return home first, and asked a nearby shop owner to bear witness for her.
The two opened the bag together only to find that it contained an ID card, a bank account book, 2,600 yuan in cash, a pair of glasses, and two boxes of pills.
She then said to the shop owner that she would not take anything from the bag, and instead, she would return it to the owner when he came back to claim it.
Liu Zhongchu, the bag owner, did not realize his bag was lost until he arrived home. He was so anxious that he made a phone call to his son who was doing business in their county.
Two days later, his son checked the video surveillance and with the help of local rural officials, he found out Wang.
He then went to Wang's home and collected his father's bag, which remained intact.
Later, he brought with him lots of gifts and revisited Wang, in an attempt to extend gratitude for her kind act on behalf of his father, and yet Wang rejected all the gifts, despite his insistence.
"Although I came from an impoverished family and was poorly-educated, I knew for sure that someone who lost his property must be deeply worried. What's more, I am not supposed to take other people's possessions as my own," said Wang with a smile.
In fact, Wang's family has been in urgent need of money. Afflicted with diabetes, she has been relying on insulin injections. Her son is also in poor health owing to the same disease. Her daughter-in-law died years ago. In addition, she also has a young granddaughter and grandson who need to be brought up by her.
After learning of her kind act, rural officials visited Wang and praised her for her spirit of returning lost possessions. Meanwhile, they called on all the people in their village to learn from Wang.
