Zhao Hongwei, a female engineer from north China, has designed a new control system for China's high-speed railway in 2016, thus enabling different Electric Multiple Units (EMUs) manufactured by different companies to be under unified control of the home-made network system.
Zhao is the chief engineer at the China Academy of Railway Science. She has committed herself to China's high speed rail industry for as long as 30 years.
Zhao was born into a military family in Langfang, north China's Hebei Province, in 1969. Her parents were strict with her, especially her father.
"I appreciated their high demands on me in my life and studies. These helped to train my tenacity and unyielding spirit," Zhao said.
China started to develop the home-made "Harmony" High-speed Railway (CHR) over 10 years ago and introduced into China various types of trains from Japan, Germany, France and other countries. However, the different standards of these trains brought a lot of problems for China's railway system.
In the negotiations with foreign high-speed rail companies, Zhao realized that the train network control was the key point for the entire railway system.
The gap between China and other countries in this regard was a real shock to her. She made up her mind to develop the whole control system at that time.
Zhao's team accepted a task in 2010 when CRH380BL EMUs did experiments on the Beijing-Shanghai Express Way.
They turned 16 EMUs into 12 EMUs in three months and tested its highest speed. Even the most advanced foreign experts claimed that it was impossible.
Zhao and her teammates analyzed all factors that would affect the power and came up with a detailed plan in three months.
By splitting up the tasks and doing experiments emulating real time factors in the lab, they accomplished the task in the end, thanks to their hard work.
Zhao became a group leader in the International Union of Railways in 2012. She was the first Asian to be a professional team leader in the alliance, which was mainly composed and controlled by Western countries.
"I can get in touch with the German railways, French railways and Italian railways and discuss with many other foreign experts about the development of railway technology in this group," Zhao said.
She has presided over the formulation and revision of some international standards on railway development.
Due to the new control system designed by her team, two Chinese standard EMUs successfully completed the rendezvous test at Zhengzhou-Xuzhou High Speed Railway on July 15, 2016.
It allowed two EMUs manufactured by different companies to be linked together, creating an international precedent and also solving China’s historical EMU problem. Zhao finally realized her high-speed train dream.
In order to support the Belt and Road Initiative, China is developing a high-speed EMU with a speed of 400km per hour. Yet, it is not all about the speed.
Zhao says that they are working hard to adopt new materials and new energy in the new EMUs, so as to develop more green and intelligent EMUs in the future.
