Ge Yaqin, a female entrepreneur from Changzhou, a city in east China's Jiangsu Province, has become famous throughout the country for her pioneering spirit, sharp management skills and affection toward her employees.

Renowned as a successful modern day businesswoman, Ge has received many honorary titles, including "Excellent Female Entrepreneur in China" and "Outstanding Chinese Female Pioneer."

Ge earned the above-mentioned awards for her contributions to social welfare as well as her unique business acumen.

Women Makes the Legend

Ge is chairperson of the New United Group, a privately owned Chinese enterprise specializing in manufacturing equipment and active in several sectors. Railway transportation, logistics and office machines are all provided by her company, which has helped usher in a new era in areas which have traditionally employed many men.

Founded in 2002, the company grew from a workshop with a 100 million yuan (U.S. $ 16 million) turnover to a large enterprise with 8 billion yuan (U.S. $1.3 billion) in total funds.

"It is a pioneering era for those who want to be the first movers in a certain sector," stressed Ge.

It was on Ge's birthday at the age of 34 that she decided to start her career in manufacturing. In the following 12 years, Ge buried her head in creating her "ecosystem," integrating aeronautics, transportation and cutting-edge technologies into one company.

Ge adopted a unique model. Instead of going down the usual route of "establishing a building, buying the equipment, recruiting more employees, soliciting potential investors or tapping its market," Ge invested in a start-up lab involved in electromagnetic compatibility, that is, a field of research which helps companies get better economy from their machines. This made her manufacturing ecosystem stand out.

"Only by taking an unconventional pathway could we become the flagship of our industry. If you want to go further you should stand on the shoulders of giants, and I stand on the shoulders of modern technology," explained Ge, since her investment later proved to be a wise decision.

In 2003, Ge led her enterprise to make cooperation with the global leader in rail technology, Bombardier Transportation, which helped Ge's company win international fame for its innovation through technology.

Later on, Ge made another achievement in aeronautics by purchasing a renowned Canadian company.

"My goal is to establish an enterprise which will itself stand like a giant for hundreds of years to come," said Ge.

Viewing Employers as Family Members

Ge expressed that employees were the backbone of any company. If people consider Ge as the number one in a large "family," those who worked alongside her are her brothers and sisters.

"New United is one of the best companies I have visited, where all around employees wear an expression of showing delight and confidence. Every member in the so called "big family" can have easy access to their leader Ge if necessary," praised Kandeh Yumkella, director general of the United Nations Industrial Development Organization after giving an on-site investigation into Ge's company and its factory.

Flextime was publicized by Ge ever since the company was founded, making things more convenient for her staff. Almost 200 employees in her company need to pick up their children before the working day is over. In addition, Ge added many positions in her company to alleviate the employment burden for her employee's relatives, benefiting 300 relatives of Ge's employees.

Besides, Ge also spent 50 million yuan (U.S. $8million) to build apartments for tackling the housing problems for her workers.

In order to help her employees keep fit, Ge invested in a fitness center equipped with a swimming pool and a basketball court. Besides, professional psychiatrists are also available for female employees, especially those who need help over a particularly burdening issue.

Zhao Rongjie, a technician in Ge's company, from northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, stated that the company was her home after her husband died. "It is Ge that helps my family out. I will work here until the end of my life as a repayment to her," said Zhao.

In addition to being a successful entrepreneur, Ge is also known for her undertakings in the field of public welfare.

In June, 2014, Ge organized volunteers from her company to partake in a social activity centered around mentally impaired children. Ge also organized donations to assist the injured in the wake of the devastating earthquake in Ludian County, located in southwest China's Yunnan Province, in 2014. She also provided financial to support many poverty-stricken children through a local foundation. Over past years, Ge has donated 10 million yuan (U.S. $1.6 million).
