Taiwan's Cher Wang Top Woman Billionaire

Forbes China, the Chinese-language edition of Forbes magazine, published yesterday The Global Chinese Billionaire List.

Robin Li, CEO of the search engine Baidu Inc, is listed as the richest businessman on the Chinese mainland. He owns $9.4 billion in assets, according to the Forbes China report.

Cher Wang and her husband Wen Chi Chen appear on the list as owning US$ 6.8 billion. Wang, who ranks no.8, is the top woman billionaire.

Cher Wang is co-founder and chairperson of HTC Corporation and VIA Technologies. She is the daughter of the late Wang Yung-ching (1917-2008), chairman of Formosa Plastics and in his time one of Taiwan's wealthiest businessmen. Cher Wang's husband Wen Chi Chen is CEO of VIA Technologies.

Wang received her master's degree in economics in 1981from the University of California, Berkeley. She joined First International Computer (FIC) in 1982. Wang and others founded VIA in 1987 and HTC in 1997.

Wang led HTC in creating in 1997the predecessor to the smart phone.

Women billionaires in the list's top 100 also include Yang Huiyan (at no. 38) from the Guangdong-based property development company Country Garden; Zhang Xin (no. 54), CEO of property developer SOHO China; Chu Lam Yiu (no. 55), chairperson of the Hong Kong-based fragrance and flavoring company Huabao International; Xiuli Hawken (no. 75), biggest shareholder of underground shopping malls developer Renhe Commercial Holdings; and Chen Lihua (no. 98), president of Fuhua International.

The report includes 213 Chinese billionaires, 115 of whom are from the Chinese mainland. The top three's respective sources of wealth are manufacturing, real estate and financial services.
