A 17-year-old girl who was diagnosed with nephrotic syndrome at the age of 9 has devoted great efforts to making an unusual idiom dictionary illustrated with paper-cuttings since her summer vacation.

The ingenious girl Liu Yu comes from Chengdu, capital of southwest China's Sichuan Province.

"Currently, people have attached great importance to traditional culture. I think idioms are an aspect of our culture and it is more interesting to use paper-cuttings to explain idioms. Meanwhile, the art form can be passed down," Liu said.

In the process of making the dictionary, she chose some idioms that are easy to understand for young children and she also noted the source of the idioms and some examples.

To date, she has made paper-cuttings of 103 idioms and she is expected to complete the dictionary by the end of next year. The young woman hopes that some publishing houses will help her publish it.

She became interested in the traditional craft in 2011 when she was a primary school student. Two years later, she held her personal paper-cutting exhibition thanks to the assistance of the school.

"I am so grateful to the school. I will send my works to the school on its anniversary every year. In 2015, I made a set of paper-cuttings with 56 nationalities which are hung on the corridor of the school."

Her teacher, Meng Huixian, said, "Liu loves her school and teachers a lot. She usually searches for photos of her teachers from the school's website and make paper-cuttings for them. She is popular with all the teachers."

Liu claimed that paper-cutting gives her a sense of achievement and she felt happy when her works won recognition from people.

Due to Liu's bad health condition, she was unable to attend school for a long time and she had to stay at home. Not being influenced by this, she has shown a positive attitude toward her life and study. Recently, she has begun learning ancient poems and maths on the Internet.
