Shen Yueyue, president of the All-China Women's Federation (ACWF), urged grassroots women's federations to do better in safeguarding women's legal rights and interests, during her recent inspection tour in south China's Guangdong Province.

Shen, who also serves as vice-chairperson of the Standing Committee of the 12th National People's Congress, held a symposium attended by women's federation officials at different levels in the provincial capital of Guangzhou.

Shen encouraged them to learn and implement the Communist Party of China Central Committee's general spirit on mass organizations, especially President Xi Jinping's remarks in this aspect, to shoulder their political responsibilities for serving women and protecting their rights and interests.

Shen listened to attendees' discussions and opinions, and talked to them about matters in detail.

The senior official stressed the significance of safeguarding women's legal rights and interests, saying that it is the Party's consistent advocacy and women's federations' primary function.

She stated that women's federations at different levels should show their concern to, and take an active part in, legislation, judicial interpretation, and the formulation and modification of regulations and policies.

Furthermore, the State policy of gender equality should be enlisted in the province's 13th Five-Year Plan (2016-2020), the assessment mechanism of regional gender equality should be improved, and the inspection work on women's rights and interests should be strengthened.

Local offices of working committees on children and women should further play to their advantages to promote the enforcement of the China National Program for Child Development (2011-2020) and the China National Program for Women's Development (2011-2020), she added.

She urged women's federation officials to carry out more research into new situations which will protect women's rights and interests, pay more attention to ordinary and disadvantaged women, and learn about their needs and difficulties.

With the implementation of the nationwide two-child policy, Shen urged them to highlight the health issues of pregnant women and improve childcare facilities and services, as well as helping them solve employment difficulties associated with balancing work and family.

Grassroots women's federations should expand their power and bring more outstanding women and those who are interested in women's causes into their team through reforms, Shen stated finally, encouraging women's federation officials to serve grassroots women and help them solve their problems.
