Three elderly people in need in Fangshan District, Beijing, received free cataract operation on January 29 as the first group of beneficiaries of a special public welfare activity to help senior citizens.

The China Ageing Development Foundation is responsible for fund raising for this activity. At least 50 elderly people who suffer from cataracts will be aided to have the operation. Cataracts have become more widespread among senior Chinese and it takes about 5,000 yuan (US $685) to perform a 10-minute operation on one eye, which unaffordable for most rural families in poverty.
